NASA scientists on December 16, 2008 announced<\/a>
\nthat \u201cTHEMIS spacecraft have discovered a breach in Earth's magnetic
\nfield ten times larger than anything previously thought to exist.\u201d
\nNASA\u2019s THEMIS mission comprises 5 probes launched in February 2007 to
\nmeasure the Earth\u2019s magnetic field. According to Wenhui Li<\/a>,
\na University of New Hampshire space physicist analyzing the NASA THEMIS
\nmission: "The opening was huge\u2014four times wider than Earth
\nitself."Jimmy Raeder, another University of New Hampshire scientist
\nanalyzing the THEMIS project data said<\/a>:
\n"We've seen things like this before but never on such a large scale.
\nThe entire day-side of the magnetosphere was open to the solar wind."<\/strong>
\nThe breach is allowing up to 20 times the normal amount of solar
\nparticles to enter the Earth\u2019s atmosphere according to the NASA
\nannouncement.<\/p>\n
