{"id":1144,"date":"2008-12-10T22:26:57","date_gmt":"2008-12-10T22:26:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/omniversity.us\/exopolitics\/2008\/12\/10\/astronomers-confirm-black-hole-at-the-heart-of-the-milky-way\/"},"modified":"2008-12-10T22:26:57","modified_gmt":"2008-12-10T22:26:57","slug":"astronomers-confirm-black-hole-at-the-heart-of-the-milky-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/omniversity.us\/exopolitics\/astronomers-confirm-black-hole-at-the-heart-of-the-milky-way\/","title":{"rendered":"Astronomers confirm black hole at the heart of the Milky Way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Mark Henderson<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/uk\/science\/article5316001.ece\"><strong>London Times<\/strong><\/a><br \/>Wednesday, Dec 10, 2008<\/p>\n<p><span>A swarm of <a class=\"IL_LINK_STYLE\" href=\"javascript:void(0)\" style=\"border-bottom: 1px solid #009900; text-decoration: underline; color: #009900;\">stars<\/a><br \/>\norbiting a vast black hole at the centre of the Milky Way has been<br \/>\nmapped with remarkable precision, providing astronomers with their most<br \/>\ndetailed look yet at the heart of our galaxy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Observations by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/\">European Southern Observatory<\/a><span><br \/>\n(ESO) in Chile has found the strongest evidence yet for a supermassive<br \/>\nblack hole at the galaxy\u2019s core, as well as charting the immense<br \/>\ngravitational effects this has on the surrounding <span name=\"IL_SPAN\"><input name=\"IL_MARKER\" type=\"hidden\" \/>stars<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the heart of the Milky Way taken in near infra-red light \" border=\"0\" height=\"185\" src=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/multimedia\/archive\/00446\/Black-hole_446781a.jpg\" title=\"the heart of the Milky Way taken in near infra-red light \" width=\"385\" \/><br \/><em>(Gillessen et al\/PA)<br \/><span>The nature of <span name=\"IL_SPAN\"><input name=\"IL_MARKER\" type=\"hidden\" \/>the black hole<\/span><span> can be inferred from the pattern of motion of the <span name=\"IL_SPAN\"><input name=\"IL_MARKER\" type=\"hidden\" \/>stars<\/span> that surround it<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/em><span>Over 16 years, the orbits of 28 <span name=\"IL_SPAN\"><input name=\"IL_MARKER\" type=\"hidden\" \/>stars<\/span><br \/>\nin the Milky Way\u2019s central region have been meticulously tracked by<br \/>\nastronomers, allowing them to study the hidden black hole that<br \/>\ninfluences their movements. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a class=\"IL_LINK_STYLE\" href=\"javascript:void(0)\" style=\"border-bottom: 1px solid #009900; text-decoration: underline; color: #009900;\">The black hole<\/a><span>,<br \/>\nknown as Sagittarius A* (pronounced \u201cSagittarius A-star\u201d), cannot be<br \/>\nseen directly, but its nature can be inferred from the pattern of<br \/>\nmotion of the <span name=\"IL_SPAN\"><input name=\"IL_MARKER\" type=\"hidden\" \/>stars<\/span> that surround it. Details of the research are published in the Astrophysical Journal. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Reinhard Genzel, of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial<br \/>\nPhysics in Germany, who led the international study team, said:<br \/>\n\u201cUndoubtedly the most spectacular aspect of our long term study is that<br \/>\nit has delivered what is now considered to be the best empirical<br \/>\nevidence that supermassive black holes do really exist. Hence, it is the best place<br \/>\nto study black holes in detail.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The observations have also allowed astronomers to pinpoint the<br \/>\nEarth\u2019s distance from the centre of the galaxy with greater precision,<br \/>\nmeasuring it at 27,000 light years. Scientists have also been able to<br \/>\nidentify common properties among the stellar orbits at the galactic<br \/>\ncentre. <\/p>\n<p><span><span>\u201cThe <span name=\"IL_SPAN\"><input name=\"IL_MARKER\" type=\"hidden\" \/>stars<\/span> in the innermost region are in random orbits, like a swarm of bees,\u201d Dr Gillessen said. \u201cHowever, further out, six of the 28 <span name=\"IL_SPAN\"><input name=\"IL_MARKER\" type=\"hidden\" \/>stars<\/span> orbit <\/span><span name=\"IL_SPAN\"><input name=\"IL_MARKER\" type=\"hidden\" \/>the black hole<\/span><br \/>\nin a disc.
