Volcanoes form along these edges because the four triangles have not been thrown together with complete accuracy so that volcanoes can spew out along the weak or open areas of this &quot;seam.&quot; Although Steiner&#39;s tetrahedron is tilted a bit compared to Hoagland&#39;s, nonetheless the principle still holds because there are a number of interpenetrating tetrahedra which can be better understood when one generates the other four Platonic solids: octahedron, cube, icosahedron and dodecahedron from the fundamental tetrahedron.
