As
\nthe nation pauses for 9\/11, let us also remember that, despite billions
\nof dollars invested in a new security bureaucracy, American airspace is
\nno more secure today than it was seven years ago.<\/p>\n
Federal
\nAviation Administration radar records indicate that the U.S. Air Force
\nwas powerless to stop a mysterious aerial incursion from surging toward
\nPresident Bush\u2019s ranch in Crawford, Tex., in January. The 77-page
\nanalysis posted by the Mutual UFO Network in July has been neither
\nchallenged nor rebutted by military officials. Nor have any scientists
\nemerged to take issue with any of the technical points raised by the
\nMUFON study.<\/p>\n
Nor have government authorities bothered to refute
\nlast year\u2019s study assembled by the National Aviation Reporting Center
\non Anomalous Phenomena. That 155-page report described how a UFO parked
\nitself over the United Airlines terminal at Chicago\u2019s busy O\u2019Hare
\nInternational for 18 minutes while ground crews watched the object burn
\na circular hole in the cloud cover upon its departure.<\/p>\n
Our
\ngovernment\u2019s refusal to acknowledge these meticulously detailed
\nreconstructions, along with the media\u2019s failure to press for answers,
\ncreates a vacuum that can only be filled by vigilant taxpayers
\ndemanding accountability from this Potemkin Village. Maybe the citizens
\nof Arizona are best positioned to elevate this conundrum into what it\u2019s
\nbeen all along \u2014 a political issue.<\/p>\n
Long before the \u201cPhoenix
\nLights\u201d incident drew international attention in 1997, Arizona Sen.
\nBarry Goldwater made repeated and now well-publicized attempts to flesh
\nout the UFO mystery. But not even the lion of modern conservatism could
\nget past the locked doors of Gen. Curtis LeMay, the former Air Force
\nChief of Staff.<\/p>\n
Several months after countless Arizonans were
\nstartled by the massive UFO cruising their skies 11 years ago,
\nGoldwater\u2019s successor, John McCain, defended the military cover story
\nthat warplanes were conducting routine maneuvers that night in a letter
\nto a constituent (at

\nbelieve that these exercises, culminating in the release of many flares
\nsimultaneously, provide a reasonable explanation for the appearance of
\nthe peculiar lights that evening.\u201d<\/p>\n
Several years later, however,
\nwhen asked at a press conference about UFOs, McCain wasn\u2019t laughing
\n(see http:\/\/video.google.com\/videoplay?docid=-4686586251683588658): \u201cI
\nthink it\u2019s of great interest. I would point out to you that there was a
\ncase a couple of years ago in Arizona of some lights that were seen
\nover Arizona and that has never been fully explained.\u201d<\/p>\n
So which is it? What does McCain know?<\/p>\n
In
\n2007, fellow Republican Fife Symington, the former Arizona governor who
\ninitially ridiculed the Phoenix Lights, admitted he\u2019d seen the damned
\nthing himself. He called it \u201cenormous. It just felt otherworldly. In
\nyour gut, you could just tell it was otherworldly."<\/p>\n
It\u2019s time for
\nthe \u201cmaverick\u201d presidential candidate to figure out what\u2019s going down
\nin his own back yard. There\u2019s never been a better moment for the folks
\nwho put McCain in office to demand a little more straight talk at the
\nnext town hall forum.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
