Local reporter on Texas UFO case leaves newspaper; integrity of local,
\n national news media explored<\/h1>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n
\nregion. He has worked as a researcher, journalist, instructor, counselor,
\njuvenile probation peace officer and public safety urgent response specialist.
\nHe graduated from Ohio University with studies in communication (journalism
\nfocus) and health education (psychology focus). In his two novels, MISSION INTO

\ncover a UFO sighting case there is no longer working at the Stephenville
\nEmpire-Tribune newspaper, effective last Thursday, Feb. 7.<\/p>\n
\nAngelia Joiner had been covering the UFO story which broke early in January and
\nbrought national and international news media representatives and researchers to
\nStephenville, other nearby small towns and the surrounding
\nregion.<\/p>\n
\nmajor TV networks and newspapers covered the incident with great interest. The
\ninternational press also paid special attention to the UFO sightings in
\nStephenville and towns in the area.<\/p>\n
\nLarry King and NBC’s Today show host Matt Lauer explored the sightings on their
\nshows. <\/p>\n
\nnewspaper there. She did an excellent job of researching and interviewing local
\nresidents who were surprised, curious and concerned about the very unusual
\nobjects they reportedly saw.<\/p>\n
\nthe case grew in January, Joiner was contacted for information as the reporter
\non the scene with some of the best knowledge of the local community.<\/p>\n
\narticles helped inform not only local residents who relied on professional
\nreporting for their community, but also assisted other Americans and people
\ninternationally understand that Stephenville people and residents in the area
\nwere down-to-Earth, solid and of good character.<\/p>\n
\nlevel-headed journalism Joiner provided helped the national news media
\nunderstand and respect the citizens in these communities. This resulted in some
\nof the most serious and credible reporting in the national media on such an
\nincident in recent memory.<\/p>\n
\npapers and news outlets. People like Larry King and Matt Lauer talked about the
\nsubject with intelligence and open minds.<\/p>\n
\nin part to the high level of credibility of local witnesses who were courageous
\nenough to come forward and the professionalism of local reporter Joiner and her
\ncolleagues in the national and international news media.<\/p>\n
\nthese witnesses and Joiner seem to be paying a price for doing their civic duty
\nand communicating about an incident that appeared to be very significant, and
\ncould even have affected the public safety of the communities in the
\narea.<\/p>\n
\nobtained for this report, management at the Stephenville Empire-Tribune did not
\nwant further coverage in the paper of the sightings by local citizens of
\nsomething that appeared to be highly unusual. Pressures may have been placed on
\nnewspaper management to discontinue articles on the subject.<\/p>\n
\nthe newspaper’s Web site, "The Stephenville Empire-Tribune is a mid-morning
\npaper published six days a week by Erath Publishers, Inc., a Consolidated
\nSouthwest Media company which is owned by American Consolidated Media. The
\nEmpire-Tribune is a member of the Associated Press, Texas Press Association,
\nWest Texas Press Association and the Inland Press Association."<\/p>\n
\nRochelle Stidham and Managing Editor Sara Vanden Berge were contacted for their
\ncomments for this report but did not immediately respond.<\/p>\n
\nmanagement face pressures to end coverage of the UFO sighting by a local peace
\nofficer, respected businessman and pilot and reportedly dozens of other local
\ncitizens? Did they back away from accounts of local citizens who said they were
\napparently being threatened for talking about what they saw? <\/p>\n
\ncase of media censorship or self-censorship and political correctness? Is it
\nabout professional courage and moral integrity? And, can the newspaper now be
\ntrusted by the community to cover important aspects of public health and safety,
\nlocal political activities and other sometimes sensitive topics?<\/p>\n
\nseem to be questions for the citizens who read and subscribe to the paper and
\nadvertisers who use that newspaper. <\/p>\n
\nEmpire-Tribune (Consolidated Southwest Media, American Consolidated Media) and
\nthe professional news and journalism organizations with which the paper is
\naffiliated (Associated Press, Texas Press Association, West Texas Press
\nAssociation, Inland Press Association) might also want to review developments
\nthere.<\/p>\n
\naccounts of local citizens so professionally, life goes on. <\/p>\n
\nto be confident that she did the best job she could have for her community as a
\nresponsible local journalist who realized something important had happened to
\nher fellow citizens, neighbors and friends. <\/p>\n

\ndevelopments, Joiner said, "It was a difficult task to achieve. I was still
\nreceiving a surprising number of e-mails and phone calls on the
\nsubject."<\/p>\n

\ngiving newspaper time to the subject. I honestly tried to do as they had
\nasked."<\/p>\n

\nkinds of community activities: the local schools and hospitals, area peace
\nofficers and public safety personnel, businesses and employers, civic groups and
\norganizations. And when they do, reporters often feel a sense of responsibility
\nto do their best for their neighbors and their communities.<\/p>\n
\nreverse too, at the local and national levels. Our newspapers, TV and radio
\nmedia, Web-based news and other similar information platforms are sometimes only
\nas good as the standards we expect of them, and the support we give to honorable
\nand ethical journalists.<\/p>\n

\neven highly unusual and unexpected situations? <\/p>\n
\naffect public health and safety, public information, our rights and
\nresponsibilities as citizens, what are our roles and those of our institutions
\nsuch as local and national government and the news media?<\/p>\n
\nquestions that, it appears, must be faced and dealt with if our communities, our
\nsociety and our nation will continue to thrive.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/h2>\n
Texas newspaper writer unemployed after publishing military harassment story of UFO witness<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n

\nrecently found herself at the center of her own story after she
\nwas directed to stop writing about UFO\u2019s and pursue more flattering
\narticles.
\nUltimately, she ended up out of a job.
\nAngelia Joiner, a staff writer with the Empire-Tribune for the past 18
\nmonths, on February 3-4, 2008 wrote two in-depth articles about Ricky
\nSorrells who alleged that he was being harassed by the United States
\nAir Force.
\nSorrells was one of several witnesses who claimed to have seen a UFO in
\nStephenville and was interviewed by the Associated Press in mid-January.
\nAccording to Ms. Joiner\u2019s published account, Sorrells alleges that
\n\u201cmilitary officials have been harassing him by flying military aircraft
\nover his property at low altitudes.\u201d The article goes on to state that
\nthe military flyovers have disturbed the man\u2019s livestock and
\ninterrupted sleep patterns.
\nThe articles created a lot of interest within the community, generating
\nrecord revenue for the newspaper through increased readership in
\nJanuary, but eyebrows were raised within the editorial offices.
\nIn an email posted on Open Minds Forum \u2014 a message board specializing
\nin UFology, Disclosure, Exopolitics and Paranormal Studies \u2014 Ms. Joiner
\nrevealed that the newspaper wanted her to cease and desist crafting
\nstories related to the matter.
\nPressure may have come from influential citizens within the community.
\nAs one city councilman allegedly put it, \u201cthe whole thing was an
\nembarrassment to the town,\u201d Joiner stated.
\nThe writer then made the decision to submit her two week notice, but
\nwas asked by her boss to leave sooner. Her computer was \u201cconfiscated\u201d,
\nher rolodex came up missing and she was \u201cmade to feel like a criminal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
