Most
\nAmericans and Russians agree that their governments should work
\ntogether to prevent an arms race in space. Large majorities in both
\ncountries favor unilateral restraint and a treaty that would keep space
\nfree of weapons. <\/p>\n
\nand Russians also support treaties that would prohibit countries from
\nattacking or interfering with each others\u2019 satellites and from testing
\nor deploying weapons designed to attack satellites. <\/p>\n
\namong the key findings of a WorldPublicOpinion.org poll of 1,247
\nAmericans and 1,601 Russians developed in conjunction with the Center
\nfor International and Security Studies at the University of Maryland
\n(CISSM). Knowledge Networks in the United States and the Levada Center

Majorities
\nin both the United States (78%) and Russia (67%) say that as long as no
\nother country puts weapons into space, their own governments should
\nalso refrain from doing so. <\/p>\n
\n(80%) also favor a new treaty banning all weapons in space. Support for
\nsuch a ban was strong among Americans even when they were presented
\ncounter arguments about the potential military advantages of deploying
\nsuch systems. <\/p>\n
\nconsensus on the issue. Majorities in both the Republican and
\nDemocratic parties believe the US government should refrain
\nunilaterally from deploying space weapons. There is also bipartisan
\nbacking for a treaty to ban these weapons, though support is higher
\namong Democrats. <\/p>\n
\nWorldPublicOpinion.org, noted that there was remarkable agreement
\nwithin and between the two countries on the issue of space weapons. <\/p>\n
\nis striking is the robust consensus\u2014among Russians as well as
\nAmericans, and among Republicans as well as Democrats\u2014that space should
\nnot be an arena for the major powers to compete for military
\nadvantage,\u201d Kull said. <\/p>\n
\nadded that \u201cthe observed consensus also reflects a robust conception of
