\nattempt to withhold survey data on aviation safety problems, the
\nCoalition for Freedom of Information (CFi) today announced the
\nunprecedented settlement of a lawsuit against the space agency in U.S.
\nDistrict Court for the District of Columbia.\n<\/p>\n
\nof NASA’s refusal to release its records concerning the 1965 Kecksburg,
\nPA UFO incident and subsequent stonewalling, CFi filed a Freedom of
\nInformation Act (FOIA) lawsuit in December, 2003, as part of a broader
\nFOIA campaign supported by SCI FI Channel.\n<\/p>\n
\nsettlement that requires NASA to comb through hundreds of documents in
\nspecified locations and provide copies to Leslie Kean, investigative
\njournalist with CFi and plaintiff in the lawsuit, under the watchful
\neye of the courts. NASA is required to declassify relevant documents,
\nexplain any redactions, and to pay Kean’s legal fees as part of the
\nsettlement. <\/p>\n
\nPresident of the Center for American Progress, who has supported Kean’s
\nFOIA effort since 2002 commented, "The time to pull the curtain back on
\nthis incident is long overdue. Leslie Kean’s victory is a triumph for
\nopen government and the spirit of inquiry."\n<\/p>\n
\nNovins & Lamont, had made the case that NASA was recalcitrant in
\nits response to Kean’s requests under the Freedom of Information Act.
\n"It is unprecedented to have achieved success at forcing an agency to
\ndo this kind of extensive historical search under FOIA without
\nCongressional intervention," Helfrich stated. <\/p>\n
