CARLSON:  Still to come, aliens of a different sort.  Are
\nextraterrestrials among us now? And is the White House trying to start
\na war with them?  Why a former government official says, \u201cOh, yes.
\nIt\u2018s all true.\u201d  When the situation returns.\n<\/p>\n

\nCARLSON:  Welcome back.  According to my next guest, the truth is out
\nthere.  Actually up there, with our neighbor to the north, Canada.<\/p>\n

\nA former Canadian government official is warning we may be on the verge
\nof intergalactic war, saying, quote, \u201cThe Bush administration has
\nfinally agreed to let the military build a forward base on the moon,
\nwhich will put them in a better position to keep track of the comings
\nand goings of visitors from space and to shoot at them if they so
\ndecide,\u201d end quote.<\/p>\n

\nPaul Hellyer is a former minister of defense and deputy prime minister
\nof the country of Canada.  He joins us now from Toronto. Mr. Hellyer,
\nthanks a lot for coming on. <\/p>\n

\nPAUL HELLYER, FORMER DEFENSE MINISTER AND DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER,<\/p>\n

\nCANADA:  Not at all, it\u2018s a pleasure. <\/p>\n

\nCARLSON:  Now, you were the minister of defense of Canada.  When you
\nautopsied that position, I believe, under Prime Minister Lester
\nPearson, did you come across any classified information that suggested
\nUFO\u2018s were real?<\/p>\n

\nHELLYER:  No, not really.  We got regular reports that showed that some
\nof them were, in fact, unidentified.  Some of the sightings could not
\nbe explained as natural phenomenon, but nothing more than that. <\/p>\n

\nCARLSON:  Well, as you know, there\u2018s been this debate for years over
\nwhether or not they are real.  Most people don\u2018t think they are real,
\nor most people at least are hesitant to say they believe they are real
\nin public.  What convinced you they do, in fact, exist?<\/p>\n

\nHELLYER:  Well, for the last two or three years, I have been looking at
\nthe evidence, and assessing it, much as I guess a judge would.  And
\ntrying to determine who was telling the truth and who wasn\u2018t.  And I
\nfinally concluded, especially after reading a book called \u201cThe Day
\nAfter Roswell,\u201d written by Colonel Philip Corso, that unidentified
\nflying objects are, in fact real.  As real as the airplanes flying over
\nyour head, and that there has been a monumental cover-up for more than
\nhalf a century.<\/p>\n

\nThis is after, you know, looking at a lot of evidence and trying to
\ndiscern who was telling the truth and who wasn\u2018t.  And I have concluded
\nunequivocally that the people, who claim that they have either seen
\nUFO\u2018s or have seen classified documents about UFO\u2018s or have seen
\nwreckage from the crash at Roswell, on or about July 4, 1947, are the
\nones telling the truth.  And consequently, I am basing my policy
\nconsiderations on that. <\/p>\n

\nCARLSON:  Where did you come across this information that the Bush
\nadministration is building a forward base on the moon, and why would
\nthey do that?  And why would they keep it from the public?<\/p>\n

\nHELLYER:  Well, to answer your second question first, I don\u2018t know. <\/p>\n

\nThat is the reason I am raising the question, is to see why they are. <\/p>\n

\nCARLSON:  Well how do you\u2014how do you\u2014that\u2018s an awfully specific claim.
\nI haven\u2018t read it in the \u201cNew York Times.\u201d Doesn\u2018t mean it\u2018s not true,
\ndoesn\u2018t mean you\u2018re wrong, but I am interested to know why you think
\nthat. <\/p>\n

\nHELLYER:  Well, because this was forecasted in Colonel Corso\u2018s book.
\nThey were wanting to build a base on the moon, as far back as 1964.
\nAnd General Arthur Trudeau (ph) — same name as one of my bosses\u2014was
\nvery determined to build a forward base on the moon.  And prepared all
\nof the specifications necessary for it, and the blueprints, and so on. <\/p>\n

\nCARLSON:  Well, is it\u2014pardon me.  I don\u2018t mean to interrupt you, but
\ndoesn\u2018t this make sense? I mean, if, in fact, there are
\nextraterrestrials and they are buzzing our planet, why wouldn\u2018t we want
\nto take steps to defend ourselves from them should they turn hostile?<\/p>\n

\nHELLYER:  Well, I think the critical question is whether or not they
\nare hostile.  You see, when they were first\u2014when the crash first
\noccurred, General Nathan Twining (ph) later became the… <\/p>\n

\nCARLSON:  In Roswell? <\/p>\n

\nHELLYER:  Yes, after that crash occurred, he declared that they were
\nenemy aliens.  Now, there\u2018s no evidence, that I have seen, that would
\nreally convince me that they are, in fact, you know enemy.<\/p>\n

\nAnd what I would like to know is whether that classification of enemy
\naliens still exists or whether it doesn\u2018t, and if it exists, what the
\nevidence is on which the United States government bases its
\nconclusions.  I think that\u2018s tremendously important. <\/p>\n

\nCARLSON:  I think that\u2018s an entirely fair question.  Now, finally, you
\nlaid out these views in September of this year at a speech at the
\nUniversity of Toronto, and according to the news report I have of the
\nspeech, your address, quote, \u201cended with a standing ovation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nAnd that implies, I think, that your views are commonplace in Canada.
\nThey are a minority view here, distinct minority view.  Do you think
\nmost Canadians believe that there is a forward base under construction
\non the Moon and that aliens are buzzing the earth?<\/p>\n

\nHELLYER:  No, absolutely not.  Most of them are skeptics.  Most of them
\nhaven\u2018t spent much time researching the subject, and so they\u2018re, I
\nthink, the average here would be very similar to the average American.
\nAnd I am hoping that, maybe, we can persuade the Canadian Senate to
\nhold hearings and listen to some of the 400 witnesses that your Dr.
\nSteven\u2014what\u2018s his name?  Oh, Greer, Dr. Steven Greer, has compiled, and
\nhear them, and, you know, make up their minds as to whether or not
\nthere is a real threat.<\/p>\n

\nCARLSON:  All right.<\/p>\n

\nHELLYER:    And, maybe, this would be just enough to push the American
\ngovernment, the U.S. Congress or Senate, into holding its own hearings,
\nand then getting the United States government finally to come clean and
\ntell us what they are worried about. <\/p>\n

\nCARLSON:  OK.  Canada\u2018s former minister of defense, Paul Hellyer.  If
\nyou are right, history will record you as a visionary.  If you are
\nwrong, well, I\u2018m glad you came on anyway.  Thank you. <\/p>\n
