The quest to make modern civilization <img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/lsquo.gif\" \/>sustainable<img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/rsquo.gif\" \/> inspired the UN&#39;s Stockholm Conference in 1972 and the <img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/lsquo.gif\" \/>global trusteeship<img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/rsquo.gif\" \/> of subsequent international environmental treaties. <img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/lsquo.gif\" \/>Sustainability<img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/rsquo.gif\" \/> is related to <img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/lsquo.gif\" \/>futurity<img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/rsquo.gif\" \/>, hence the Brundtland Commission in 1987 defined sustainable<br \/>\ndevelopment as <img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/lsquo.gif\" \/>development which meets the needs of the present, without<br \/>\ncompromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs<img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/rsquo.gif\" \/>. <img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/lsquo.gif\" \/>Sustainability<img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/rsquo.gif\" \/> animates <img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/lsquo.gif\" \/>the precautionary principle<img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/rsquo.gif\" \/>, affirmed by the European Union (EU) in 1990 in its Bergen<br \/>\nDeclaration on Sustainable Development, which requires ecological<br \/>\npreservation in cases of scientific uncertainty where serious or<br \/>\nirreversible damage is threatened. The Earth Summit in 1992 established <img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/lsquo.gif\" \/>sustainable development<img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/rsquo.gif\" \/> as the most important policy of the 21st century. <img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/lsquo.gif\" \/>Sustainability<img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/rsquo.gif\" \/> is at the heart of The Rio Declaration on Environment and<br \/>\nDevelopment and Agenda 21, accords signed at the Earth Summit that<br \/>\nherald a new paradigm of society, economics and the environment. The<br \/>\nEU&#39;s Fifth Environmental Action Programme (1993) pursues <img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/lsquo.gif\" \/>sustainability<img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/rsquo.gif\" \/> in industry, energy, transport, agriculture and tourism. <img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/lsquo.gif\" \/>Sustainability<img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/rsquo.gif\" \/> has also been endorsed by the Clinton Administration (1994).<br \/>\nIn the light of these events, <img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/lsquo.gif\" \/>sustainability<img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/rsquo.gif\" \/> is now used widely in biology, economics, sociology, urban<br \/>\nplanning, ethics and other domains. It is regarded as tantamount to a<br \/>\nnew philosophy, in which principles of futurity, equity, global<br \/>\nenvironmentalism and biodiversity must guide decision-making. Far from<br \/>\nbeing a mere doctrine of development science, <img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/lsquo.gif\" \/>sustainability<img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/giflibrary\/12\/rsquo.gif\" \/> has emerged as a universal methodology for evaluating<br \/>\nwhether human options will yield social and environmental vitality.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/journal\/113509890\/abstract?CRETRY=1&amp;SRETRY=0\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/journal\/113509890\/abstract?CRETRY=1&amp;SRETRY=0<\/a><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"25%\" \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Methods of defining sustainability Andrew D.
